Dr. Rebecca Young, an audiologist with Beltone Hearing Aid Center in Eau Claire, WI, was recently featured in a local news story that has now been syndicated to other news stations. I’m excited to share more about the story with you, as it covers some very important information!

The news story covers a recent study from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland that could offer hope of preventing cognitive decline.

The study examined the relationship between hearing loss and dementia and found that the two conditions are indeed connected. Dr. Rebecca Young agrees wholeheartedly, as do we! Dr. Young notes that she believes hearing aids can actually help lower the risk of cognitive decline as long as hearing loss is diagnosed and treated early.

This is why it’s so important to visit your audiologist as soon as you think that you may be experiencing hearing loss. Did you know that the average person waits seven years after realizing that they might have a hearing loss before doing something about it?

As soon as you notice a persistent ringing in your ears or that you’re not hearing as well as you used to, you should have a comprehensive hearing assessment. You’ll want to start the process of treating your hearing loss before you develop any cognitive issues that you’ll need to manage as well.

Nicole Weber, the Executive Director at Azura Memory Care Center in Eau Claire, says that isolation is a red flag for cognitive decline. Many people experiencing hearing loss isolate themselves from others because it’s tough for them to communicate in social settings and they may feel embarrassed. This is understandable—it’s no fun to have to ask others to repeat themselves over and over!

The trouble is that isolation can lead to cognitive decline and other mental health issues. When you’re isolated, you don’t keep your mind as stimulated as you did before. There’s evidence that taking care of your hearing could help you avoid isolating, thus preventing cognitive decline and dementia.

Remember, once your hearing is gone, you can’t get it back. Because hearing loss often progresses gradually, you may not even notice that you have symptoms of hearing loss until it’s too late. This is why you should get your hearing checked regularly. And if your audiologist determines that you need hearing aids, you shouldn’t delay.

Let’s face it—no one looks forward to the day that they need to wear hearing aids. But the good news is that there are so many models on the market today that are nearly invisible. And we are committed to helping you find the right device for your unique situation.
